5. Who installs the system - and is my car insured?

7. Do I need a Ghost immobiliser for my insurance?

This causes a lot of confusion - mainly because “Ghost” has become a generic term in the industry.

Much like Hoover or Sellotape, insurers often use “Ghost” as shorthand for what they’re actually asking for: an engine start immobiliser.
In most cases, they don’t specifically require the Ghost brand itself.

Ghost-branded systems are TASSA accredited and rely on a manual authentication method. The engine will not start unless a personalised PIN sequence (sometimes up to 20 button presses) is entered using existing steering wheel or dashboard buttons.

The limitation with this approach is that it relies solely on manual user input. It’s a silent, standalone system, meaning:

  • If the PIN sequence is discovered, the vehicle can be started
  • During an attempted theft, the owner is not alerted
  • There is no professional monitoring to detect or respond to vehicle movement

In practice, insurers are rarely asking for a specific brand. Most are looking for a system that meets recognised Thatcham security standards, commonly Thatcham S5 or S7, often as a condition of cover on higher-value vehicles.

  • With S5 Deadlock, the engine cannot start without the ID tags present, and the vehicle can also be manually immobilised remotely via the app
